INFINITELY FOREVER
Music is forever, but bands are ephemeral.
I’m getting ready to head over to Great Scott for what will be the last Pretty & Nice show for the foreseeable future. It’s hard to put into words what this band means to me.
It started with a post on a pop-punk band’s message board - I don’t remember if it was just press photos or recording pictures, but we were intrigued. I finally had a chance to see them on September 28th of 2006 at the Abbey Lounge, along with my friend since 5th grade, Roger. The band was great, and we spoke for a few minutes after the show.
Then I had a chance to listen to their first album, Pink & Blue. It was a great piece of what I continue to refer to as the band’s signature “spazzy pop wonderfulness”. Then “Research & Development” came on. These were the deconstructionist pop mad scientists that I had been looking for.
I’ll spare the details, but over the course of the intervening 8 years I have been able to experience this band’s mission statement of spreading joy and love more times than I can count. Roger joined as bassist and manager. I’m fortunate to have had the chance to help put out a few of their releases on cassette, hop in the big yellow van for a few tour dates, help design the cover of their final EP, and generally help spread their positive vibes. I could see this band every night and never get tired of it.
If you like a band, support them. Even if that just means paying for an album, or a ticket to a show. Tell a friend about their album. Say hi after a show. Invite some people out to one of their shows. If you can, help hustle them onto to a show, or help put out their music. Help boost the signal, however you can. It may turn out that your favorite band will end up being your favorite humans.
In short, thank you for writing “New Czar”, and please keep doing amazing things.
