Favorite Live Band: Thee Oh Sees
They tore it up each of the four times I saw them, including two sets 2 hours apart (video from that second show). Somehow I had never seen them live before, and I will not make the mistake of missing them again.
Favorite Venue: Trailerspace Records
We essentially lived here during SXSW. Awesome bands, no lines or waiting ever, great pizza next door, and BYOB. Thanks for having us, guys.
This Band Melted My Face Off: Puffy Areolas
I had the pleasure of catching two Puffy Areolas sets, one as a five piece at Valhalla and one as a two-drummer, three guitar beast of a seven piece at Trailerspace (video here). Their brand of psych-garage freakout is exactly the kind of stuff I was hoping to find at SXSW.
Favorite Band I Had Not Heard Before: Blouse
Though we intended to go to the Longbranch to catch the White Arrows’ nightcap set, Blouse went on shortly after we got there and won me over pretty quickly.
Biggest Disappointment: Tennis
I completely understand that traveling across the country to play multiple sets a day in quick succession is not an optimal situation for most bands, but Tennis looked pretty bored and seemed to mail it in hard.
Worst Venue: Emo’s East
If you took everything you don’t like about the Worcester Palladium and then added the negative qualities of an airplane hangar, you would get Emo’s East. This place bummed me out so much that I skipped The Spits and The Gories.
Notable Things I Discovered On The Trip:
1. The Best Show - Marky Ramone’s Romance Novel (might be the funniest thing I have ever heard)
2. The Puddle of Mudd cover of Funk 49 by James Gang (also funny)
3. Spotify was born for road trips.
As a music junkie who had kind of gotten lost when it came to seeing live shows recently, this is exactly what I needed.
